FLOOD WARNING: The St. Johns River near Cocoa is approaching major flood stage, and the National Weather Service forecasts it will reach that level later this week.![]()
The river gauge near Cocoa read 16.8 feet Wednesday evening, which is moderate flood stage. The NWS forecast issued Wednesday morning calls for the river to rise to 17 feet, the threshold for major flooding, by about Thursday and stay at that level through the weekend. The record at that gauge is 17.6 feet.![]()
According to the NWS, at 17 feet some roads flood and water approaches low-lying homes in the Silver Pines subdivision in Rockledge and low-lying structures along Pluckebaum Road in Cocoa and Rockledge. Low-lying structures in the Lake Washington area of Melbourne also flood, and many yards, ditches and pastures go under water.![]()
If the river reaches 17.2 feet, the NWS says water enters homes in the Lake Poinsett area west of Cocoa, in Silver Pines and in the Shakespeare Park area of Cocoa. Providence Road west of Cocoa would become impassable, cutting off access to homes in the Mullet Lane and Bass Road area, and docks and the parking lot at Lone Cabbage Fish Camp would flood.![]()
At the current level, the NWS says water covers yards and may enter low-lying homes along the river in the Lake Poinsett area.![]()
Farther north, the St. Johns above Lake Harney was at 8.66 feet Wednesday evening and is forecast to rise steadily to 9.8 feet by around Monday, just under the 10-foot major flood stage. At 9 feet, water enters the first story of homes on Whitcomb Drive and covers Mullet Lake Park. At 9.3 to 9.5 feet, secondary roads flood near Lake Harney and Hatbill Road, and water begins moving into low-lying homes, including the Black Hammock area near Lake Jesup.![]()
The St. Johns is a slow-moving river, and flood levels can take days or longer to recede. The NWS updates its forecasts as conditions change. Current readings are available at water.noaa.gov.![]()

Nov. 4, 2:40 p.m., Update: Water Main Break Isolated![]()
The broken water main has been located and has been isolated from the rest of the water system so that repairs may begin. The water main was damaged by the severe flooding experienced in south Melbourne. ![]()
Because the broken water main has been isolated from the rest of the water distribution system, all customers should now have water service restored. However, some customers may still be experiencing lower-than-usual water pressure. ![]()
The precautionary boil water notice that was issued for all customers on November 2 is still in effect and could remain in effect through the end of the day Friday, November 6.
Thank you for your continued patience. We will issue an update as soon as we have more information.

Do you think the Brevard Supervisor of Elections did enough or anything at all to ensure people trapped could exercise their right to vote? He turned down help and suggestions from officials and the press to ensure people were informed and given fair opportunities. We sued him in the past for failing to do his officially duty and he may be looking at several lawsuits now in coming days.![]()
When we sued him last time, he fired the employee that was responsible for the actions that we sued over, but took no personal responsibility as a supervisor in charge.
