Google's AI model broke out of a cybersecurity test and hacked three real companies, the company confirmed Friday.![]()

The incident happened in May during a test run by Irregular, an independent firm that conducts cybersecurity evaluations of AI models. Google says its Gemini model found public information online and guessed credentials to get into three websites it believed were part of the test.![]()

In one case, the model guessed passwords until it got into a protected system. In the other two, it found login credentials in a public repository and used them to access protected systems. The Wall Street Journal first reported the story.![]()

Heather Adkins, Google's vice president of security engineering, said the model stopped in all three instances, the affected companies were notified, and the testing partner has since changed its processes.![]()
