West Melbourne Man Arrested Following Intentional Hit-and-Run Involving Juvenile![]()
Report from West Melbourne Police:
At approximately 4:30 a.m. on October 13, 2026, West Melbourne police officers were dispatched to the Corner Store, located at 1100 S. Wickham Road, in reference to a possible burglary in progress.
Officers arrived within four minutes and made contact with the store owner, 32-year-old Kavan Vishnubhai Patel. Patel told officers he had received an alert from the alarm company and observed through the store’s closed-circuit video surveillance system that the front glass door had been broken. He reported seeing a male wearing a light-colored hoodie leaving the area on an electric bicycle.![]()
Officers from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the Melbourne Police Department assisted West Melbourne officers in searching the surrounding area for the individual. The search also involved a Melbourne Police Department K-9 Unit and the West Melbourne Police Department Drone Unit.![]()
During the search, an officer located a male matching the reported description lying along the side of the roadway. The individual appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. Officers determined the individual was a 14-year-old juvenile, who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.![]()
During the investigation, detectives determined that Patel had intentionally struck the juvenile with his vehicle, left the scene, and returned to the store. Patel withheld this information from responding officers and did not disclose his involvement until confronted by detectives. ![]()
As a result, the juvenile remained on the side of the roadway for nearly an hour without medical assistance due to Patel failing to stop to render aid or notify Law Enforcement. ![]()
As a result of the investigation, Patel was charged with Aggravated Battery and Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Great Bodily Injury. Patel is being held in custody at the Brevard County Jail with no bond.![]()

Arrangements announced for Brevard County Sheriff Agent Kevin Morris ![]()
As everyone is aware, this past weekend our agency lost one of our team members in a traffic crash while responding to an Officer Involved Shooting. Agent Kevin Morris, who was killed in the line of duty, was a 16 year veteran of law enforcement having served previously with the Palm Bay Police Department and more recently with our agency as a Homicide Agent. Kevin was not only a great cop, but he was an amazing son, husband, dad, grandfather, coach, and friend!! He was a strong man of faith and a mentor to so many within our agency!! ![]()
First and foremost, I want to thank our citizens, our community, and the thousands of first responders from across the nation who have lifted our agency and Kevin’s family up in prayer, as we face this most difficult of times!! I always say that it takes a community to protect a community and the show of love for Kevin and our agency has been truly amazing!!![]()
Kevin will be laid to rest with full Law Enforcement Honors this coming Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Calvary Chapel Melbourne at 2955 Minton Rd., West Melbourne, FL. The services will begin at 11:00 A.M. with the bestowing of Law Enforcement Honors taking place outside the church immediately following the Celebration of Life Service. Our citizens and community that Kevin so proudly served, are invited to join us for the celebration of Kevin’s life as he loved this community and was so proud to serve with our agency!!![]()
If you plan to attend the service please plan to arrive no later than 10:30am and expect significant traffic delays in the area as there will be a huge law enforcement and first responder presence from agency’s across the state of Florida that will be in attendance!! The service will be live-streamed by Space Coast Daily. ![]()
On behalf of Kevin’s family and our entire agency, thank you for all of your support during this very sad time for our agency. We are truly blessed to serve in a community that loves its law enforcement officers and stands with them each and every day!!![]()
