ROCKLEDGE — After nearly six decades of serving fresh seafood to Brevard County families, Clayton’s Crab Company has announced it is permanently closing its doors. Sunday, May 25th, will be the last day the beloved Rockledge institution is open for business.

In a heartfelt message posted to Facebook Friday morning, the owners cited rising costs and worsening economic conditions as the driving force behind the difficult decision.

“Our mission has always been to provide high-quality seafood to our community. Unfortunately, due to current economic conditions and the continued rise in the cost of goods, we are no longer able to do so in a way that meets our standards or serves our customers as we would like,” the announcement read.

The closure marks the end of a remarkable run for one of Brevard County’s most recognizable small businesses. Clayton’s Crab Company was founded in 1967 by Clayton Korecky, Jr., a local fisherman who had begun catching more blue crabs than he could sell and decided to open a wholesale seafood operation at 5775 U.S. Highway 1 in Rockledge. The retail market followed in 1970 and eventually grew into the largest seafood market in Brevard County.

In 2013, Korecky sold the business to Jan and Brian Walker. Jan had worked alongside Clayton for roughly 30 years before the ownership transition, and Brian had joined the company in 2009. The Walkers continued the traditions Korecky built, including hand-picking the crab meat — a practice the company long highlighted as a point of distinction from competitors.

Over the years, Clayton’s became known not just for blue crabs but for a wide selection of fresh and frozen seafood, including shrimp, lobster, grouper, sushi-grade tuna, and prepared items like signature crab cakes. The market also offered overnight shipping nationwide and was a go-to supplier for both households and local restaurants across the Space Coast.

The business drew loyal customers spanning multiple generations, many of whom responded to the closure announcement with an outpouring of grief on social media. The post drew more than 350 reactions and 111 comments within the first hour of being published Friday morning.

For those who want one final chance to say goodbye and stock up, the owners are offering 20% off all grocery and frozen seafood items on both Saturday and Sunday. The store is located at 5775 U.S. Highway 1 in Rockledge and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives and your tables for so many years,” the owners wrote. “We will always cherish the memories, friendships, and relationships we’ve built along the way.”

Clayton’s Crab Company joins a growing list of long-standing Brevard small businesses that have struggled to survive in the face of inflation and supply chain pressures that have driven up the cost of goods across the food industry in recent years.
