TODAY: Disability Candidate Forum Underway at Hotel Melby in Downtown Melbourne![]()
One month ahead of Election Day, One Voice Coalition Florida is hosting a nonpartisan Disability Candidate Forum today, Friday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hotel Melby, 801 E. Strawbridge Ave. in downtown Melbourne.![]()
Organizers say it is the only forum of its kind currently scheduled in Florida and is focused entirely on disability policy. Topics include home and community-based services waiver funding, oral healthcare access, adult Medicaid coverage, education, vocational rehabilitation, employment, and transportation.![]()
The event is being held in partnership with Disability Rights Florida, the Arc of Florida, the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, the VFW Department of Florida, Family Network on Disabilities, and Florida Voices for Health.![]()
Confirmed candidates include U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon (D), U.S. Rep. Mike Haridopolos (R) and Democratic challenger Jennifer Jenkins in Congressional District 8, and Florida House candidates from Districts 30, 31, 32, 33, and 34.![]()
According to organizers, both candidates for Florida governor were invited, but neither confirmed.![]()
The forum will also include a panel discussion on Amendment 3, the proposed homestead property tax exemption, looking at how changes in local revenue could affect municipal accessibility infrastructure and community-based services.![]()
