Palm Bay, Fla. — A Palm Bay woman is recovering from a near-fatal attack after police say her husband tried to kill her while she slept, stabbing her repeatedly in the face and neck with a pair of scissors and biting her arm so severely that a chunk of skin was torn away.

According to an arrest affidavit from the Palm Bay Police Department, the assault happened in the early morning hours of July 31, 2025, inside the couple’s home on Manor Drive NE. The victim, Jyasmin Collado-Cardenas, told investigators she awoke around 4 a.m. to find her husband, 62-year-old Angel Humberto Cardenas, on top of her, holding her down and driving the blade of half a broken scissor into her neck.
Police say Jyasmin had been sleeping in the same bedroom but separate from her husband due to an earlier criminal case in which Cardenas was accused of molesting their daughter. As she fought back, Cardenas allegedly bit deep into her right forearm. She managed to break free after a struggle and fled to her vehicle, driving herself to Palm Bay Hospital despite significant blood loss.

Medical staff determined her injuries were so severe that she was airlifted under a trauma alert to Holmes Regional Medical Center. She suffered a deep stab wound to the neck, multiple facial lacerations, and a severed left earlobe.
Officers responding to the home found Cardenas unresponsive inside with self-inflicted puncture wounds to his neck. He was taken to the hospital and later placed under a Baker Act hold. Police say evidence at the scene — including pools of blood, the scissors, and blood spatter — matched Jyasmin’s account of the attack.

Detectives noted that just hours before the incident, Jyasmin had noticed a pair of scissors on the bed. When she tried to move them aside without drawing attention, her husband allegedly told her, “Don’t worry, those aren’t for you. Women are way too nosey.” Hours later, she says, the same scissors were used in the assault.
Cardenas now faces a charge of Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder.
As Jyasmin begins her long recovery, friends have launched a fundraiser to help cover her medical bills, living expenses, and the financial impact of the attack. The GoFundMe campaign, “Support Jyasmin’s Journey to Healing,” describes her as a survivor, mother, and fighter, and has so far raised $555 of its $4,500 goal.
Organizer Izy Smith wrote, “She was assaulted in her sleep by her husband and nearly lost her life. She is now facing an overwhelming road to healing — emotionally, physically, and financially. Your support, whether through donations, prayers, or sharing this page, means the world right now.”
Police are continuing to investigate the attack. Anyone with information related to the earlier child molestation case involving Cardenas is urged to contact Palm Bay Police.
