The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a sweeping recall that affects nearly every Tesla Cybertruck currently on the road—more than 46,000 vehicles in total. This marks the eighth recall for the polarizing electric truck since deliveries began just over a year ago.

According to federal safety officials, a stainless steel panel running along both sides of the windshield can detach while driving, creating a serious hazard for other motorists. The component, known as the cant rail assembly, is bonded to the vehicle using structural adhesive. However, the agency determined that the adhesive used by Tesla may not hold up under certain environmental conditions, raising the risk of the panels flying off mid-drive.

Tesla plans to fix the issue by using a stronger adhesive and reinforcing the attachment points. All repairs will be done free of charge, and owners can expect official notification letters to begin arriving by mail starting May 19, 2025. The recall covers all 2024 and 2025 Cybertruck models manufactured between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025.

The recall comes after videos showing people easily ripping off the panels with their bare hands went viral on social media, sparking a wave of ridicule and renewed scrutiny of the truck’s build quality.

Tesla, which only began delivering the Cybertruck in late 2023, has now recalled the vehicle eight times for various safety-related issues. In November, a faulty electric inverter was found to cause loss of power to the drive wheels. Just months later, the company recalled Cybertrucks over accelerator pedals that could get stuck in the trim. Other recalls have involved malfunctioning windshield wipers and issues with the dashboard display screen.

This latest setback adds to a growing list of challenges for Elon Musk’s electric vehicle empire. While no injuries related to the detached panels have been reported, tensions are rising across the country. Prosecutors in Colorado recently charged a woman in connection with attacks on Tesla dealerships, including one incident where Molotov cocktails were thrown at parked vehicles. In South Carolina, federal agents arrested a man accused of setting fire to Tesla charging stations and found anti-government and cryptocurrency-themed writings in his possession.

Despite the company’s high-profile marketing and cult-like fan base, Tesla has been losing ground in the EV race, especially against rising competitors out of China. The company’s stock has dropped 42% so far in 2025, with analysts pointing to weakening global sales and growing concerns over safety and reliability.
