AT&T revealed on Friday that hackers had accessed records of calls and texts for nearly all of its cellular customers over a six-month period. The breach occurred between May 1, 2022, and October 31, 2022, raising significant privacy concerns.

In its statement, AT&T clarified that the compromised data did not include the content of the calls or texts, nor did it encompass personal information such as Social Security numbers, birth dates, or other personally identifiable information. However, the hack did include records identifying the telephone numbers that interacted with AT&T customers during the affected periods.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, AT&T disclosed that records from January 2, 2023, were also compromised for a “very small number of customers.” The telecom giant stated that it learned about the illegal download in April and has been actively working with law enforcement since then. “At least one person has been apprehended,” AT&T noted in its statement.
Despite the severity of the breach, AT&T assured customers that, as of now, it does not believe the data is publicly available. The company emphasized that it is taking proactive measures to alert impacted customers via text, email, or U.S. mail. Customers are also encouraged to log into their accounts for more information.
For those concerned about whether they were affected by the breach, AT&T has set up a dedicated information page at att.com/DataIncident.
