Former Congressman Dave Weldon announced run for State House

Former Brevard U.S. Congressman Dave Weldon announced that he is going to run for Florida House District 32 in the 2024 election.

The seat is currently occupied by Representative Thad Altman who has termed out in the position for the 2nd time. Altman is now running for County Commissioner, a position he held from 1984 to 1992.

Weldon, a physician, was the congressman in Brevard immediately prior to Congressman Bill Posey who has held the seat since 2009. He first won election in 1994 and subsequently to 2006. Instead of running for re-election, he decided to run for Senator and ended up losing in the Republican Primary.

This announcement essentially closed the door on others who were intending to run for the open District 32 seat. Most notably was current school board chair Matt Susin. For nearly a year, Susin says he’s been garnering support and “raising $400k” in committed funds for the run according to him. However recent legal issues and the less than favorable performance as School Board Chair has caused him to lose much of the modest support he had. He will likely end up abandoning his hopes at State House, and run for reelection to his school board seat.

Also considering a run was Melbourne City Councilman Tim Thomas. Tim was all in to run against Matt in the Republican primary, however now that Weldon has announced, Tim will likely just run for reelection to his city council seat.

So far, no other candidates have filed to run for the heavily Republican leaning district.

President Trump is now publicly at odds with his own Justice Department over who destroyed the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.In a Truth Social post, the president said he disagrees 100 percent with U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro and called the damage "a pure case of VANDALISM," pointing to the grass, the "86 47" carved into the lawn, and other elements of the surrounding area.But here is what the Justice Department itself said in writing. In a motion filed Friday to drop the felony case against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, Pirro admitted the damage to the landmark was the "result of flawed installation by the contractor" rather than intentional vandalism. Her office wrote that it only learned after the indictment of information showing the damage came from a botched installation and not vandalism, as the Interior Department had initially represented.The filing also laid out why. Pirro cited rainy and windy weather, repeated failures of testing on the sealing of the expansion joints, and delays in getting sealing product to the worksite, writing that the rush to finish led to "hasty and botched work" that was never remediated before the fencing came down. The contractor, Atlantic Industrial Coatings LLC, had been given a no-bid contract on the project, and the president said in April that he picked a contractor who had worked on one of his swimming pools.There is more. Pirro herself visited the pool on July 17 after it was fully drained and saw significant damage throughout the pool area. The filing notes a recent inspection found damage even in the middle of the pool, where a vandal would not likely be peeling the lining, and concluded it is difficult to attribute the widespread damage to vandalism. Court filings this week also included grand jury testimony that the pool was leaking a million gallons a week before Hearn was ever arrested.Hearn, a three-time Olympian, had pleaded not guilty and faced up to 10 years in prison. At the July 2 news conference announcing the indictment, Pirro told reporters the evidence would prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Hearn willfully destroyed property.The president says vandals did it. A Brevard County man is being held without bond after deputies say he crashed a vehicle into a home, forced his way inside and stabbed two people during a demand for car keys, according to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.Deputies were already responding to reports of a hit and run on Interstate 95 Wednesday afternoon when a second call came in about a similar vehicle crashing into the front yard of a Port St. John residence. Deputies and the Florida Highway Patrol arrived to find several people outside the home, including one victim holding a cloth against a stab wound to the neck.Investigators say the residents were inside when they heard the crash, followed by a man running onto the back porch and entering through the sliding glass door. The suspect, identified as Jadarius West, demanded their car keys and grabbed a knife from the kitchen, according to the Sheriff's Office. Deputies say he cut one victim on the hand, causing that person to fall, then cut a second victim on the neck when they tried to force him out of the house. A third resident was not injured but fell while trying to get out.All of the residents made it out of the home while West remained inside. Deputies surrounded the residence and secured the perimeter before West jumped out of a window and was taken into custody, the agency said.The injured victims were treated for their wounds. West was booked into the Brevard County Jail on charges of armed burglary of an occupied dwelling, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault on a person over 65, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery on a person over 65, criminal mischief, driving while license suspended with knowledge and leaving the scene of a crash.
