TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo has emerged as a contender to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under President Donald Trump’s administration. The White House is searching for a new director following the withdrawal of former Congressman Dr. Dave Weldon’s nomination, and Ladapo’s name is gaining traction.
According to CBS News, Ladapo and former Texas Congressman Michael Burgess are among the potential candidates being considered. Ladapo, in particular, is receiving support from those close to Trump as the administration reshapes its public health leadership.
The shift comes after Weldon’s nomination faltered due to a lack of Republican backing in the confirmation process, prompting the White House to pivot to other options. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis threw his weight behind Ladapo on Sunday, calling him a “fantastic selection” for the role.
“If Ladapo becomes CDC Director, it’ll show that ‘Make America Healthy Again’ isn’t just a catchphrase,” DeSantis said, referencing the administration’s health-focused agenda.
