TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo has emerged as a contender to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under President Donald Trump’s administration. The White House is searching for a new director following the withdrawal of former Congressman Dr. Dave Weldon’s nomination, and Ladapo’s name is gaining traction.

According to CBS News, Ladapo and former Texas Congressman Michael Burgess are among the potential candidates being considered. Ladapo, in particular, is receiving support from those close to Trump as the administration reshapes its public health leadership.
The shift comes after Weldon’s nomination faltered due to a lack of Republican backing in the confirmation process, prompting the White House to pivot to other options. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis threw his weight behind Ladapo on Sunday, calling him a “fantastic selection” for the role.
“If Ladapo becomes CDC Director, it’ll show that ‘Make America Healthy Again’ isn’t just a catchphrase,” DeSantis said, referencing the administration’s health-focused agenda.
Ladapo has signaled his enthusiasm for the opportunity, emphasizing his alignment with Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on critical public health priorities.
“As Florida’s Surgeon General, I’m eager to champion the core principles I share with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—promoting the essentials of good health, ensuring access to clean air, food, and water, and defending medical freedom,” Ladapo said. “America’s future should far surpass its past.”
Appointed by DeSantis in 2021 and reconfirmed in 2023, Ladapo has been a polarizing figure during his tenure. Democrats have criticized him as a “quack” for challenging conventional medical views, including his skepticism toward COVID-19 vaccines and the World Health Organization. Nevertheless, his supporters argue his independent streak makes him a bold choice for the CDC.
Weldon, whose nomination was recently pulled, has also endorsed Ladapo as his replacement. “I fully back Dr. Ladapo for CDC director—he should be President Trump’s top pick,” Weldon told CBS. “His track record in Florida, combined with his education and expertise, makes him an ideal fit.”
As the Trump administration continues to finalize its leadership team, Ladapo’s potential appointment could signal a significant shift in the nation’s public health strategy.
