May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month — a time to recognize the unique risks motorcyclists face and reinforce the shared responsibility we all have to keep our roads safe.

Motorcycles are a popular way to get around the Space Coast — whether it’s for the thrill of the ride, fuel efficiency, or simply enjoying the sunshine. But with that freedom comes vulnerability.

Here in Brevard County, motorcyclists represent a disproportionately high percentage of traffic fatalities. While motorcycles account for just 3% of vehicles on the road, they represented 19% of all traffic deaths in 2024, according to Signal 4 Analytics.

And the trend is continuing. In the first few months of 2025 alone, five motorcyclists have already died on Brevard roadways. These are more than just statistics — they are fathers, daughters, friends, and neighbors.

The Reality on Brevard Roads

According to the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO)’s most recent State of the System Report, motorcycle crashes in Brevard remain a serious concern:

  • From 2018 to 2022, motorcycle-involved crashes decreased by 9%, yet the fatality rate increased by 8%.
  • Nearly 40% of fatal motorcycle crashes occurred on arterial roads — the high-speed roads that connect neighborhoods to highways.
  • Helmets were not worn in 38% of fatal motorcycle crashes, despite the well-documented lifesaving benefits.

Why Are Motorcyclists at Greater Risk?

Motorcyclists are more exposed than occupants of passenger vehicles and are far more likely to be seriously injured or killed in a crash. Factors like distraction, speeding, or failing to yield can have fatal consequences.

Common causes of motorcycle crashes in Brevard County include:

  • Left-turn collisions where a vehicle turns into the path of an oncoming motorcycle.
  • Unsafe lane changes without checking blind spots.
  • Impaired or distracted driving, making it nearly impossible to respond in time.

What Can We Do?

For Riders:

  • Obey the speed limit. Higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase crash severity.
  • Wear a DOT-approved helmet and protective gear.
  • Never ride impaired or distracted.
  • Be visible and predictable. Use signals, stay out of blind spots, and follow traffic laws.

For Motorists:

  • Look twice before turning or changing lanes. Motorcycles are smaller and harder to see.
  • Give motorcycles plenty of space. Don’t tailgate — they may need to brake suddenly.
  • Check blind spots. A quick glance can save a life.

Moving Toward Vision Zero

The SCTPO is committed to Vision Zero — a future where no one dies or is seriously injured on our roadways. That vision includes everyone, especially our most vulnerable road users: pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists.

This month, and every month, let’s remember: safe roads require effort from all of us. Whether you’re behind the wheel or on two wheels, please ride alert, ride safe, and ride smart. Every life counts.
