A federal judge in Miami has thrown out President Trump's $10 billion defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal and Rupert Murdoch, saying the president was "grasping at straws."![]()
U.S. District Judge Darrin Gayles dismissed the case with prejudice on Saturday, meaning it cannot be refiled. The judge ruled that the lawsuit failed to show the Journal acted with actual malice, the standard public figures must meet under the Supreme Court's 1964 New York Times Co. v. Sullivan decision.![]()
The suit centered on a Journal story published last year about a sexually suggestive letter and drawing bearing President Trump's name that was reportedly included in a 2003 birthday album compiled for Jeffrey Epstein's 50th birthday. President Trump denied writing the letter and called the story false and defamatory.![]()
Gayles had dismissed the original complaint in April but allowed the president to file an amended version, which he did in May. In Saturday's ruling, the judge wrote that the amended complaint's malice allegations were vague and conclusory, and noted the Journal's story included the president's denial.![]()
The ruling comes as the current president is involved in legal fights with several other news organizations, including the BBC, The Associated Press, CNN, MS NOW and Politico.![]()
