Melbourne, FL—Robert Mitchell Lueck, a Melbourne resident, was finally arrested on August 17, 2023, nearly ten months after causing a horrific crash that claimed the lives of two pedestrians, Rikki Grace and Megan Grace, on October 18, 2022. Now, Lueck has filed a motion to get out of jail on bond.

A Fatal Decision

The arrest report detailed the incident on the evening of October 18, 2022. Lueck, driving a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck, was found to have engaged in reckless driving along Front Street in Melbourne. According to the report, Lueck’s vehicle fishtailed out of control while accelerating, eventually veering onto the sidewalk and striking the two victims. Both Rikki Grace and Megan Grace were pronounced dead at the scene, leaving a community in mourning.

Robert Lueck

Dashcam footage from a witness reveals that Lueck’s driving displayed a “willful and wanton disregard for the safety of others,” particularly given the densely populated urban area and the presence of regular pedestrian traffic. The footage leaves little doubt that Lueck was a danger behind the wheel.

The Role of Intoxication

Further exacerbating the tragedy is the fact that Lueck was under the influence at the time of the crash. A search warrant revealed that Lueck’s blood alcohol level was between 0.12 and 0.19 g/100mL, well over the legal limit, indicating significant intoxication. In addition to alcohol, Lueck had high levels of Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and its metabolites in his system, substances that likely further impaired his ability to operate the vehicle safely.

A Troubling History

Adding to the community’s concern is Lueck’s driving history. The investigation uncovered that Lueck’s driver’s license had been suspended on October 3, 2022, just weeks before the fatal crash. The suspension was due to his failure to maintain the minimum required insurance on his vehicle—a responsibility he had willfully neglected. The report also highlights that Lueck’s insurance for the vehicle had been canceled on August 19, 2022, further underscoring his disregard for the law.

Despite these alarming factors, Lueck continued to drive illegally, ultimately leading to the deaths of two innocent pedestrians.

Bond Reduction

Lueck is currently facing multiple serious charges, including two counts of Vehicular Homicide, two counts of DUI Manslaughter, and Driving While License Suspended Causing Death, among others. His bail has been set at $750,500—a figure that his legal team is now contesting as “unreasonable” given his indigent status.

In a motion filed by his defense, Lueck’s attorney argues that the high bail is discriminatory and violates his right to reasonable bail as protected by the U.S. Constitution. However, many in the community fear that if released, Lueck could pose an ongoing danger to public safety, given his demonstrated pattern of reckless and illegal behavior.

A Community on Edge

As the legal proceedings continue, the community remains on edge. The memory of the two lives lost in this tragic crash looms large, and the fear that Lueck might walk free only adds to the anxiety. Many residents are calling for stricter enforcement and quicker legal actions to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

For now, Robert Mitchell Lueck remains in custody, but the question lingers: Will the justice system ensure that this man, who has already shown a blatant disregard for the law and public safety, is held accountable for his actions? Or will he be released, leaving the community to wonder if another tragedy is just around the corner?
