Brevard County, FL – As Hurricane Helene approaches, Brevard County officials have announced the closure of Mathers Bridge to boating traffic, effective at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 26. The closure comes in response to increasing winds and worsening weather conditions.

Mathers Bridge, a 700-foot historic swing-span structure built in 1927, connects South Tropical Trail on Merritt Island to Banana River Drive in Indian Harbour Beach. While it will remain open to motor vehicle traffic, the bridge will be off-limits to all boating vessels until further notice.

The decision was made in anticipation of severe winds expected to hit the area. Weather reports predict wind gusts from Hurricane Helene could reach 40-55 mph on Thursday, with sustained winds ranging from 25-35 mph. These conditions pose a significant threat to boaters attempting to navigate around the structure, prompting county officials to take precautionary measures.

Boaters in the area are urged to make necessary preparations immediately, as the bridge will not reopen for water traffic until the storm passes and authorities can fully assess the safety of the structure. Officials have not provided an exact timeline for when the bridge might reopen to boats, as this will depend on the extent of the storm’s impact.
