The incident occurred on the evening of May 26, 2024, at the intersection of West King Street and Washington Avenue. At approximately 9:11 PM, Cocoa Police Department received a frantic 911 call reporting a vehicle versus pedestrian crash. Upon arrival, officers rendered aid to two juvenile victims and began their investigation. Witnesses described the fleeing vehicle as a silver Nissan Frontier with an unknown driver and license plate.
Approximately 15 minutes after the crash, Kenneth McGhee contacted the Cocoa Police Department’s non-emergency line. He inquired if there had been any reports of someone being hit on Highway 520. After receiving confirmation from dispatch, McGhee admitted, “I think I did it.” He provided his address at 2428 Delys Street and described his vehicle, a silver Nissan Frontier. Officers quickly responded to McGhee’s location and found him sitting in his truck, which had damage consistent with the crash.
McGhee’s identity was verified through his Florida driver’s license and a Driver and Vehicle Information Database (DAVID) inquiry. He confessed to being the driver at the time of the incident. McGhee was transported to Cocoa Police Department for processing and then to Rockledge Regional Medical Center for a blood draw, which he consented to.
Investigations revealed that McGhee failed to remain at the scene or provide aid to the victims after striking them. Traffic Homicide Investigations (THI) obtained footage from multiple locations confirming McGhee’s vehicle traveling westbound on West King Street after the incident.
The two juvenile victims sustained severe injuries. One victim, identified as SB, required surgery, while the other, identified only as MB, succumbed to his injuries on May 28, 2024, at Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Florida.
McGhee faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash with death and leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury, as outlined in Florida Statutes 316.027(2)(c) and 316.027(2)(b). He received two criminal citations related to the incident and was subsequently arrested and transferred to Brevard County Jail.
