Odyssey Charter teacher of the year awarded to teacher arrested for domestic violence against wife with cancer

Published on

In a quiet and secluded ceremony, Odyssey Charter School’s math teacher, Timothy Carney was awarded as the school’s Teacher of the Year.

According to public records, Carney was arrested just this January for domestic violence. The arrest report states that he pushed his wife during a verbal altercation around 10:30pm on January 18, 2023. The report says the argument started because Timothy’s wife who says she is suffering from cancer, was complaining that he was being to loud on the phone.

The report goes on to say that he began yelling and screaming in her face, telling her to close the bedroom door. She stated she would once their dog came back into the bedroom, but instead he pushed her into the room and closed the door. He admitted his actions to police when they arrived and was subsequently arrested for Domestic Battery.

Records show that prosecutors chose to eventually drop the charges, but it is not clear why.

There was no official announcement on Odyssey’s social media accounts, or website announcing the award for Carney. Other staff and teachers within the math department stated that they were no part of the decision making process, nor even were aware he had been awarded the title. According to the school’s website, Carney teaches Pre-Algebra.

Administration at the highest levels also state they had no input in the decision as well.

Teachers and students alike state that Carney shows up to work consistently disheveled and un-groomed. His students claim that he gives them worksheets to work on during class while he simply sits and eats.

The decision is the latest in an onslaught of internal division, and allegations of racial discrimination and investigation within the charter school.

One teacher who reached out to us stated, “Parents need to know that their students are not safe here.”

We will be reporting more on these allegations involving Odyssey’s Civics teacher, Thomas Rebman once official records have been received.
