X Introduces New Guidelines on Adult Content Sharing

X (formerly known as Twitter) has announced new guidelines allowing the sharing of consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior on its platform, provided the content is properly labeled and not prominently displayed. This move reflects X’s commitment to balancing artistic expression with user safety.

Freedom of Expression

X’s updated policy emphasizes the platform’s belief that users should have the autonomy to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. The company recognizes sexual expression, whether visual or written, as a legitimate form of artistic expression. According to the policy, adults should be free to engage with content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality.

Protecting Vulnerable Users

To ensure the safety of minors and users who do not wish to see such content, X has put several safeguards in place. The platform will restrict exposure to adult content for children or users who choose not to see it. Additionally, any content that promotes exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, or harm to minors is strictly prohibited.

Clear Labeling and Distribution Rules

The new guidelines require all adult content to be properly labeled. X does not allow the sharing of such content in highly visible places like profile photos or banners. Adult content is defined as any material depicting adult nudity or sexual behavior intended to cause sexual arousal, including AI-generated content.

User Responsibilities

Users who regularly post adult content are asked to adjust their media settings to ensure all images and videos are behind a content warning. This warning must be acknowledged before the media can be viewed. Users under 18 or those who do not have a birth date on their profile will not be able to view marked content.

Enforcement and Reporting

X has outlined clear steps for reporting unmarked or inappropriate content. Users can report violations through the in-app reporting flow. Those who believe their content was incorrectly flagged can submit an appeal.

This policy update marks a significant shift in how X handles adult content, aiming to respect artistic freedom while protecting vulnerable users from exposure to inappropriate material.
