Oklahoma City, OK – Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters, Moms for Liberty ally and a leading voice in the “parental rights” movement, was reportedly caught with images of nude women on a television in his office during a closed executive session of the State Board of Education on July 24, 2025.

The incident happened as board members Becky Carson and Ryan Deatherage were listening to testimony in a student-transfer appeal. Both members observed images of naked women on a TV screen in Walters’ office. Carson initially mistook the figures for being clad in tan bodysuits but, then realized she was seeing “nipples” and “pubic hair” of women lying on what she said appeared to be a chiropractor table. Shocked, Carson confronted Walters, ordering him to turn off the television. She said Walters, visibly flustered, repeatedly saying “what is this” then after some difficulty, turned off the TV without offering any explanation or apology. Deatherage corroborated the account, noting he had seen the images earlier but tried to ignore them. He described the footage as appearing to be an “old, soft-core porn video.” Other board members confirmed Walters appeared “shook up” but couldn’t see the video themselves where they were positioned.

This event has ignited a firestorm, particularly given Walters’ prominent role as a moral crusader against perceived “sexual content” in schools. He has relentlessly campaigned to remove books he deems “pornography” from school libraries, equating young-adult titles with explicit material and frequently asserting that “our children are being exposed to radical sexual material pushed by teacher unions and the Biden administration.” Walters has also been known to label dissenting teachers as “groomers” and has actively sought to revoke the licenses of educators who permit banned books or support LGBTQ+ students.

Board members have highlighted a stark double standard. Carson pointed out that Walters “demands accountability from teachers, yet I am being exposed to this,” while Deatherage asserted that Walters should be held to the same standards as any teacher. Indeed, the board routinely suspends educators’ licenses for less serious offenses.

Walters’ spokesman, Quinton Hitchcock, has attempted to dismiss the claims as a “junk tabloid lie” and suggested that “any number of people could have turned on the TV.” However, board members insist that Walters was the sole individual with access to the remote and that he acknowledged the video’s inappropriate nature before shutting it off.

This scandal is not an isolated incident but rather appears to be part of a concerning pattern of alleged hypocrisy within the orbit of Moms for Liberty, an organization that markets itself as a wholesome grassroots movement fighting for “parental rights.”

In June 2025, Moms for Liberty’s own 2023 “Legislator of the Year,” South Carolina State Representative RJ May III, was federally indicted on multiple counts of distributing child sexual abuse material. Investigators allege May used an anonymous messaging app to share over 200 graphic files, some involving toddlers. Prosecutors also found self-produced videos of him having sex with a young girl. His arrest sent shockwaves through conservative circles, particularly because May had been heralded by Moms for Liberty as a national role model for his “parental rights” advocacy and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. The case starkly illustrates the growing divide between the organization’s self-righteous public messaging and the alarming behavior of those it elevates.

Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler faced widespread calls for her resignation from the Sarasota County School Board after her husband, Christian Ziegler, then-chair of the Florida Republican Party, was accused of sexual assault. Police documents indicated that both Zieglers admitted to engaging in threesomes with the accuser. This admission came despite the Zieglers having long presented themselves as staunch defenders of “traditional family values” and playing a key role in drafting Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, which restricts discussions of LGBTQ+ issues in schools. Critics, including former high-school class president Zander Moricz, quickly pointed out the apparent hypocrisy of those campaigning against LGBTQ+ relationships engaging in such activities themselves. The Sarasota school board voted 4-1 to request Bridget Ziegler’s resignation, but she, like Walters, has refused to step down. Protesting parents famously chanted, “Ban Bridget, not books.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch has reported on Walters’ “close relationship with Moms for Liberty,” noting his appearances at their conferences and events. Walters has publicly endorsed the use of PragerU’s conservative videos in Oklahoma classrooms and invited Chaya Raichik, the founder of Libs of TikTok, to serve on a state library-media advisory committee. Many argue that Walters’ ties to “extremist organizations such as Moms for Liberty and individuals such as Chaya Raichik” send a clear message that LGBTQ+ students are not welcome in public schools.

Walters has also reportedly utilized taxpayer dollars for travel to ideological conferences. Records obtained by The Frontier show he billed the state over $1,000 for airfare and expenses to speak at the Moms for Liberty Joyful Warriors Summit in Philadelphia last June, with Moms for Liberty covering his hotel costs. He also used state funds to attend events hosted by the Heritage Foundation and other far-right groups, and has become a frequent guest on Fox News.

This latest embarrassment for Ryan Walters, after months of demonizing teachers and students over “sexualized” materials and aligning himself closely with Moms for Liberty, showcases a striking contradiction. As investigations loom and calls for accountability grow louder from state lawmakers, Oklahomans and parents across the country are left to consider whether those who preach the loudest about morality truly practice what they preach.
