Today in Florida History, courtesy of the Florida Historical Society! April 26, 1865 – The state of Florida officially surrendered to the Union, marking the end of the Civil War in the state. Earlier that month, on April 4th, Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, thus determining the Union’s victory. Despite this, fighting continued in several places as some troops had not realized the war was over. The news of Lee’s defeat reached Tallahassee in late April, leaving Acting Governor Abraham K. Allison with no other choice but to surrender on April 26. On May 10th, Union Brig. Gen. Edward McCook was able to capture the state’s capital city and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing around 60,000 slaves.
