Melbourne, Fla. – After three years of planning and construction, a new shelter for women and children experiencing homelessness in Brevard County is set to open at Helen’s House.
The facility, located in Melbourne, spans 10,000 square feet and represents a $3 million investment aimed at providing a safe haven for women and children to regain stability. Helen’s House is the first phase of a three-part project by CITA Rescue Mission, a faith-based organization dedicated to offering shelter and support services.
“This initial phase will accommodate up to 36 women and children. With two more phases planned and the foundation already in place, we aim to support over 100 women and children once all phases are complete,” stated Buddy Morrow, Executive Director and President of CITA Rescue Mission. The organization currently operates a 54-bed facility for men on U.S. 1.
Over the past year, Brevard County has seen a 43% increase in female homelessness. Morrow noted that many women face significant challenges such as finding affordable housing, dealing with mental health issues or addiction, and escaping domestic violence. The new shelter aims to fill the gap left by other services, ensuring that no woman or child is left without options.
Helen’s House will provide a minimum year-long program, featuring education opportunities, training, and various resources for women. Although some final touches and paperwork are still pending, the shelter is expected to open its doors by June 1. There is already a waiting list of individuals seeking help.
CITA Rescue Mission plans to complete the construction of the second building within the next 18 months, further expanding their capacity to support the community.
