Governor DeSantis recently signed into law a significant bill that introduces the Hope Card Program. This initiative, effective from October 1, 2024, is designed to assist individuals who have been issued orders of protection by providing them with a Hope Card. This card serves as a practical tool for quickly and efficiently proving the existence of a legal injunction against another individual. The legislation was filed by Senator Lauren Book.

“In the pursuit of justice and safety for survivors of domestic violence, we must innovate and adapt to the evolving needs of those we seek to protect,” says Leader Book. “The HOPE Card program is not just a piece of legislation; it’s a lifeline for survivors. It provides a tangible and immediate resource for individuals navigating the complexities of protective orders, offering a level of security and empowerment that goes beyond legal documentation.”

The Hope Card, which can be either digital or a physical wallet-sized card, will contain essential details such as the names and birth dates of both the respondent and the petitioner, the issuing court details, the case number, and the order’s issue and expiration dates. Importantly, the card will also list the statewide domestic violence hotline number, offering an additional resource for the holder.

One of the key features of the Hope Card is that it is provided free of charge by the clerks of the circuit court, who will create and distribute these cards within three business days of receiving a request. The card is valid for two years, or until the expiration of the injunction, and can be renewed if the injunction remains in effect.

This legislation not only streamlines the process for individuals seeking to assert their legal protections but also introduces criminal penalties for anyone who fraudulently uses a Hope Card. This ensures that the system maintains its integrity and serves its purpose effectively.
