PALM BAY, Fla. — A 53-year-old woman is dead following an hours-long armed standoff with Palm Bay Police on Sunday that ended after she repeatedly fired at officers, according to authorities.
The incident began on March 23, 2026, just before 3:00 p.m., when Palm Bay Police received an anonymous complaint about loud music in the 800 block of Serenade Street Northwest. A second call came in around 3:40 p.m. reporting the same issue.
While officers were en route, dispatch received a more urgent call around 3:58 p.m. reporting that a woman had fired multiple gunshots from a residence at 859 Serenade Street NW.
Police later identified the woman as Kamla Grimmer, 53.
Situation Escalates as Officers Arrive
When officers arrived on scene, they established a perimeter and attempted to make contact using their patrol vehicles’ public address systems. During that time, around 4:17 p.m., Grimmer began firing from inside the home.
Investigators say she initially fired toward the rear of the residence, in the direction of a canal where officers had positioned themselves.
As the situation escalated, authorities issued a “Code Red” reverse 911 alert, urging nearby residents to shelter indoors.

Negotiations and Continued Gunfire
By 4:35 p.m., officers were able to establish phone contact with Grimmer and began attempting to negotiate a peaceful surrender.
However, the situation continued to deteriorate.

At approximately 4:43 p.m., Grimmer briefly opened the front door, fired additional shots, and retreated back inside. At that point, Palm Bay Police activated its SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Unit.
Police emphasized that up to this point, officers had not returned fire.
SWAT Deployment and Exchange of Gunfire
SWAT and crisis negotiators arrived on scene around 5:13 p.m., continuing efforts to resolve the situation without further violence.
At 6:09 p.m., Grimmer again opened fire, this time directly toward SWAT officers. Police say officers then returned fire as she retreated back into the home. It was not immediately clear if she had been struck.
Shortly after, around 6:15 p.m., SWAT deployed gas into the residence in an attempt to force a surrender. Negotiations continued even as additional gas was deployed at 6:53 p.m.

Final Exchange and Discovery
The standoff reached its final moments at approximately 7:08 p.m., when Grimmer again fired at officers. Police returned fire.
After observing no further movement inside the home, officers deployed a drone into the residence. The drone revealed Grimmer was unresponsive.
At 7:17 p.m., SWAT officers and medics entered the home, where she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
No Injuries, No Hostages
Authorities confirmed no officers or civilians were injured during the incident. Police also addressed rumors circulating online, stating there was never a hostage situation.

Investigation Underway
As is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has taken over as the lead investigative agency. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit is assisting.

Preliminary findings indicate Grimmer was killed by return fire from officers. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
Police Chief: “Officers Showed Great Restraint”
Palm Bay Police Chief Augello said officers made every effort to resolve the situation without loss of life.
“We always pray for the best outcome where no life is lost,” Augello said. “Our officers attempted every scenario possible to avoid a loss of life and showed great restraint during this incident. Unfortunately, after their lives, as well as those in our community were placed in immediate threat of deadly force by active gunfire, they were left with no other option but to return fire.”
No Known Warning Signs
According to investigators, there was no significant history that would have suggested an incident of this magnitude would occur. The investigation remains active and ongoing, and all further media inquiries are being directed to FDLE.
Prior Arrest History
Public records show that Grimmer had at least one prior arrest. A 2019 Florida Highway Patrol criminal report affidavit indicates she was arrested for driving under the influence in Hillsborough County.
According to the affidavit, troopers responded to a suspicious vehicle stopped on an interstate exit ramp in Tampa, where Grimmer was found in the driver’s seat of a running vehicle, appearing disoriented and unable to answer basic questions.
She reportedly told troopers she had consumed alcohol prior to driving and performed poorly on field sobriety exercises. Breath samples later measured .241 and .231, nearly three times the legal limit.

Family Member Disputes Military Status
In a message sent to The Space Coast Rocket, a man identifying himself as Grimmer’s former stepson disputed claims circulating online that she was a military veteran.
According to the message, Grimmer was not a veteran and did not complete Marine Corps basic training. The individual, who stated she had been married to his father for over 15 years, also described a history of personal struggles and said the two divorced approximately five years ago.
The claims have not been independently verified through military records, and no official confirmation of her service status has been released by authorities.
