With energy bills climbing at more than double the rate of inflation, President Donald Trump has zeroed in on renewable energy as the culprit. In a fiery Truth Social post, Trump labeled wind and solar power “THE SCAM OF THE CENTURY!” and promised to halt future projects he claims are “destroying farmers.”
But energy analysts say Trump is pointing in the wrong direction. According to industry experts, the recent surge in electricity prices has far more to do with rising demand, aging power grids, natural gas costs, and extreme weather events worsened by climate change.
What’s Really Driving Prices Up?
- Data Centers & AI Boom: Massive growth in cloud computing and artificial intelligence is driving up demand for power-hungry data centers.
- Electric Vehicles: More EVs on the road means more strain on the grid.
- Natural Gas: Over 40% of U.S. electricity comes from natural gas, and prices are climbing due to increased exports to Europe and global markets.
- Climate Impacts: Heat waves, wildfires, and storms are stressing an already fragile energy infrastructure.
Trump’s Energy Shift
Trump campaigned on slashing household power bills in half. Instead, Democrats argue his policies are doing the opposite — gutting clean energy incentives while doubling down on fossil fuels. His administration has rolled back Biden-era clean energy grants and made it harder for new wind and solar projects to move forward.
