A 60-year-old Melbourne woman was killed Monday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on U.S. 1 just north of Rocway Drive, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The crash occurred at approximately 7:27 a.m. and involved five vehicles, including the woman’s motorcycle.

Troopers say all five vehicles were traveling northbound when traffic began to slow. The motorcyclist, riding a 2004 Honda Shadow VLX, was positioned between a Volkswagen Tiguan ahead of her and a Chevrolet Equinox approaching from behind. The driver of the Equinox, a 52-year-old Melbourne man, failed to notice traffic slowing and struck the motorcycle from the rear.

The force of the initial impact sent the motorcycle sliding into the left rear side of a Kia Rio traveling in the center lane. The Equinox continued forward after striking the motorcycle and then collided with the right rear of the Volkswagen Tiguan ahead of it. Debris from the impacts struck a Nissan Sentra traveling in the same center lane.

The female motorcyclist and the driver of the Tiguan were transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center. The motorcyclist was later pronounced deceased. Her next of kin had not yet been notified at the time of the report. All other drivers involved either suffered minor or no injuries and remained at the scene.

Troopers confirmed the motorcyclist had been wearing a helmet.
