SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. – The death of a 3-year-old boy at a hotel on State Road A1A on Thursday night appears to have been accidental, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded at about 8 p.m. Thursday to the Americas Best Value Inn at 180 A1A after a report of a child not breathing, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday. Brevard County Fire Rescue personnel rendered aid before the boy was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the preliminary investigation indicates the child was playing in the room while his mother was outside on the balcony. When she went inside to check on him, she found him unresponsive and immediately called for help.

Based on initial investigative findings and preliminary autopsy results, the death appears to be accidental, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tod Goodyear had confirmed to The Space Coast Rocket earlier Friday that deputies were conducting a death investigation involving a child at the hotel.

A resident who lives and works at the hotel told The Space Coast Rocket that the boy lived in unit 224 with his parents, a young couple who had been staying at the property for only a few weeks. The resident said she saw the boy’s mother outside reading a book and smoking for about an hour before going back inside, where the boy was found unconscious with a bag over his head. A guest staying in the neighboring room, who is a nurse, attempted to resuscitate him before first responders arrived, the resident said.

The Sheriff’s Office did not say how the child died and has not confirmed the resident’s account.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Agent Sam Grimes of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit at (321) 633-8413.
