“WHERE’S THE PLANE?”Video taken by witnesses moments after Sunday's Learjet crash in Palm Beach County shows almost no recognizable sign of an aircraft. In the video, stunned bystanders can be heard asking, "Where's the plane?"The answer is the speed and force of the impact. According to the FAA, the jet dropped from 35,250 feet to 8,750 feet in just over a minute before hitting the ground nose-first. At that speed, an aircraft does not break apart into large pieces the way it might in a crash at a lower speed or a shallower angle. Most of the jet was destroyed on impact, leaving a large crater in the roadway, fire, and scattered fragments. The crash happened around 12:50 p.m. near Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. All nine people aboard were killed. The jet departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. The NTSB is leading the investigation, with support from the FAA. No cause has been determined.#PlaneCrash #PalmBeachCounty #BreakingNews ...

Slow-motion, frame-by-frame review of dashcam video from Sunday's deadly Learjet crash in Palm Beach County appears to show the jet's horizontal stabilizer missing as the aircraft plunged toward the ground. The image is blurred by the jet's speed and a rain-covered windshield, and investigators have not confirmed whether the stabilizer was intact. But if it was missing, that would help explain the near-vertical dive seen in the video. The Learjet 60 has a T-tail, with the horizontal stabilizer mounted on top of the vertical fin. That stabilizer keeps the nose from pitching down and holds the elevators pilots use to control the aircraft's pitch. Without it, a jet like this becomes essentially uncontrollable and pitches sharply nose-down. No amount of pilot skill can recover it.A missing stabilizer would not necessarily be what started the emergency. Air traffic control audio captured by LiveATC.net shows that minutes before the crash, the pilot reported ice accumulating on the aircraft, moderate turbulence, and precipitation, and asked to climb. The crew then declared a mayday, reporting an overspeed condition and a descent of 20,000 feet per minute. When a jet dives well beyond its maximum speed, the forces on its structure become extreme, and parts can tear away during the descent. Investigators will look at whether pieces of the tail were found away from the main crash site, which would show whether it separated in flight.According to the FAA, the jet dropped from 35,250 feet to 8,750 feet in just over a minute. All nine people aboard were killed.
