Brevard Elementary School Counselor arrested for DUI hit and run

Ashley Ruffin, who is a certified school counselor at Creel Elementary School, was arrested after Melbourne Police responded to a hit and run near Eau Gallie Blvd and Pineapple Ave.

According to the arrest affidavit, Ruffin in her white Ford SUV, hit another vehicle, and then tried to run. Police say she only stopped after the driver of the other vehicle followed her and made her stop.

She told police that she had 3 glasses of wine, and that on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being stone cold sober, and 10 being blackout drunk, she was at a 2.

She agreed to take a field sobriety test, and during one of the tests, she took one step and nearly fell over. The officer states that she began to cry and said to “just arrest her.” She instead continued with all the tests, and failed each one. At that time she refused to take a breathalizer.

She was then placed under arrest and charged with DUI, DUI with property damage, leaving the scene of an accident, and failing to maintain a single lane.

She was transported to BCSO Jail, and her case is still pending. Her employment status with Brevard Public Schools is unknown.
