The Melbourne Police Department provided the following update on the search for a vehicle that hit and killed a pedestrian, and fled the scene.

UPDATE
On Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 11:37 PM, the owner/driver of the suspect vehicle was identified.
The vehicle, (a 2016 white Jeep Compass), has been recovered from a residential address in Southeast Palm Bay. This investigation is still active and further details will be released at a later time.

We are getting giant mats of Sargassum with very young turtles washing onto the beaches. The Sargassum is where young turtles live for a decade or more. The Sargassum was broken up and spread out from the recent hurricanes, and then the strong easterly flow of wind pushed those mats towards the coast like a conveyor belt, dropping Sargassum and baby turtles all over our beaches.Sea turtle hatchlings only have the instinct and energy to swim out to the Sargassum once; they cannot do it again. If you put the small, dehydrated, and lethargic turtles in the ocean right now, they will likely drown. Rehab and then a boat ride out far offshore is their best chance, and what we can do for them if you call our hotline.
