BREVARD COUNTY, FL. – Brevard County Emergency Management is monitoring the track of Hurricane Elsa, and even though any potential impact of the tropical system remains uncertain at this time residents are advised to closely monitor forecasts and to focus on Hurricane Season preparedness while enjoying the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Residents are advised that Elsa’s projected track and intensity forecasts could and will likely change over the coming days, but residents should remain alert and closely monitor local weather forecasts for updates of the hurricane’s track and any developments regarding intensity and local impacts.

Hurricane Season began June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.  Regardless of Hurricane Elsa’s developments, this is the time of year that residents should diligently work to prepare and help ensure the safety of themselves, their families, and pets, and to stay informed.

“Families, individuals and businesses who know their vulnerability and what actions to take can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster by taking action to prepare,” said Emergency Management Director John Scott.

Emergency Management recommends:

Make a Plan: If you think you’ll need to evacuate, decide now where you will go, whether it’s to a friend’s house or a hotel or elsewhere, and include your pet in your plan. If you have certain medical needs, including power-operated medical equipment or prescriptions that require refrigeration, and you plan to use a county shelter, you’ll need to register for a special-needs shelter at http://web.brevardcounty.us/SpecialNeeds/Registration.aspx.

Build a Kit: You may need to survive on your own for some time after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours. Assemble this kit well in advance, and plan ahead for needed medications, and supplies for pets and infants. Include a cell phone charger for your car, and you’ll want to have some cash and a full tank of gas.
