Brevard County Commission boosts security by adding metal detectors to Commission Meetings

BREVARD COUNTY, FL. – Residents and others who attend Brevard County Board of County Commissioners meetings will now be required to pass through metal detectors as part of upgraded security measures at the Government Center in Viera.
The addition of metal detectors in the lobby of Building C, and being used for the first time for the Board of County Commissioners’ regular meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, is designed to increase the safety and security of citizens, Commissioners and employees of Brevard County by screening for prohibited weapons. Chapter 790 Florida Statute prohibits anyone from bringing weapons into County Commission meetings.

Previous Commission meetings have included the presence of Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputies. Commission meetings will continue to be staffed with deputies who will be in place if additional screening measures are warranted.
The metal detectors will only be used for access into the Board of County Commissioners’ Chambers. Those wishing to attend Commission meetings are encouraged to arrive early to allow additional time to get through the security screening process.

Citizens visiting the Government Center for day-to-day business and other public functions will not be required to go through metal detectors.
