Brevard County, FL — At just 44 years old, Ricky Moreno is in the fight of his life.
A dedicated father, hard worker, and friend to many in our community, Ricky has spent years battling severe heart failure. Relying on a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) 24/7 to survive, Ricky’s condition has left him vulnerable to life-threatening infections and mounting medical setbacks. The mechanical device, powered by external batteries, does the work of his failing heart—keeping him alive while he awaits a long-overdue heart transplant.
Over the past two years, Ricky has endured more than five hospitalizations, battled multiple serious blood infections, and missed countless days of work due to circumstances far beyond his control. Most recently, he was rushed to the hospital after suffering a severe infection and multiple brain bleeds. He spent more than a week in a coma, on life support, with doctors unsure if he would regain basic functions such as walking or speaking.
Miraculously, Ricky pulled through.
Now, he and his family are facing the next major hurdle: a heart transplant. Though he is prepped and ready for the procedure, the costs far exceed what his insurance will cover. He is currently undergoing a pre-operative biopsy, waiting for the life-changing call that a donor heart is available.
In the meantime, friends and family have launched a fundraiser to help ease the financial burden—covering everything from mounting medical bills to the cost of supporting his family during his recovery. Even the smallest donation, organizers say, would make a significant difference.
“Everyone is rooting for Ricky,” said one close friend. “He’s been through hell and back. We just want him to focus on getting well and being here for his kids.”
