Last week, several units from Palm Bay Fire Rescue were dispatched to a major structure fire in the city’s southeast area, encountering challenging conditions from the outset. The blaze had already engulfed 25% of the dwelling by the time firefighters arrived, presenting heavy fire and smoke that required long hose lines to establish a water supply.

Complicating their efforts was the discovery of multiple large lithium-ion batteries stored in the garage, alongside dozens of smaller batteries. These items posed unique dangers due to their volatility when exposed to high temperatures, causing intense flames and significant obstacles in fire suppression. Lithium-ion batteries are known for their tendency to ignite or even explode when damaged or overheated, making them an added risk to firefighters and complicating efforts to contain the blaze.
