Hillsborough County, FL – A dog, now named Trooper, was saved from a harrowing situation after being found tied to a pole in neck-deep water, directly in the path of Hurricane Milton. The dog’s owner, Giovanny Aldama Garcia, faces felony animal cruelty charges for leaving the animal to fend for itself during the storm’s approach.

Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Orlando Morales discovered the dog during rescue efforts and recorded the distressing scene. The video, which shows the dog trembling in fear, captured the hearts of many online. Morales can be heard reassuring the dog, saying, “It’s okay, buddy. I don’t blame you,” as he worked to free the animal.

Governor Ron DeSantis announced the filing of charges during a press conference, alongside Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister and State Attorney Suzy Lopez. DeSantis emphasized that Florida takes animal cruelty seriously, especially in the face of emergencies. “This defendant is charged with a felony and could face up to five years in prison for his actions,” stated Lopez.

Garcia, who had left the dog, Jumbo, on the side of the road while evacuating to Georgia, told investigators he could not find anyone to care for the animal. The dog was left defenseless as the storm approached, leading to outrage among animal rights activists and the public alike.

The dog, now recovering in Tallahassee, will soon be adopted and renamed Trooper, in honor of the brave trooper who rescued him.

State Attorney Lopez expressed a desire for stronger penalties for those who abandon animals during emergencies, citing the potential for further harm. “Hopefully, lawmakers will consider harsher penalties in cases like these,” she said.
