Deputies responded to the restaurant at approximately 2:18 a.m. Thursday, October 22, 2026, after a 911 call reported that a person had been shot. When deputies arrived, they found Butler suffering from life-threatening injuries. Brevard County Fire Rescue personnel rendered aid before he was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

What Investigators Say Happened

According to a news release issued by BCSO Thursday afternoon, the preliminary investigation indicates Butler and another man had a verbal exchange in the parking lot regarding a previous disagreement. The Sheriff’s Office said the disagreement escalated into a physical altercation when Butler attacked the other man.

Investigators said a single shot was fired during the altercation by the man who was attacked. After the shooting, Butler went inside the business, where he collapsed.

The man who fired the shot remained at the scene and met with responding deputies. He was detained and transported to BCSO Criminal Investigative Services to speak with homicide agents.

Based on the initial investigative findings, the Sheriff’s Office said the shooter was released and continues to cooperate with agents. He has not been publicly identified, and BCSO has not announced any charges.

The investigation remains ongoing as agents attempt to conduct additional interviews with individuals who were present at the time of the shooting.

Earlier Reports

Early Thursday morning, BCSO spokesperson Tod Goodyear told The Space Coast Rocket that deputies were investigating a shooting at the location, that a suspect had been detained, and that the victim had been transported to the hospital.

Later that morning, Graham’s Beach Grill posted a statement on Facebook saying all of its staff members were safe. The restaurant said the two men knew each other and had a problem at another bar in Merritt Island several days earlier, and that the victim came to Graham’s to settle their differences after learning the other man would be there. The restaurant said the two met in the parking lot, never went inside the bar together, and that the shooter stayed at the scene until law enforcement arrived.

Although the restaurant carries a Cocoa Beach address, the property is in an unincorporated area of the county, which places the case under the Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction rather than the Cocoa Beach Police Department.
