A Brevard County judge threw the book at a convicted sex offender this week, handing him more than double what his own attorney asked for.Circuit Judge Steve Henderson sentenced Aree Lafayette Spivey to 30 years in state prison on Tuesday, the maximum allowed, after a jury convicted him of sexual battery by physical force on a victim over the age of 12.The defense asked Henderson for 15 years, the minimum mandatory under Florida's Prison Releasee Reoffender law. Henderson went the full 30.Spivey had a chance to avoid this. Court records show he rejected the State's plea offer before trial, and a source familiar with the case says that offer was 10 years. Instead, he took his chances with a jury in Henderson's Viera courtroom. On Sept. 3, jurors found him guilty and also answered a special question: Did Spivey commit the crime within three years of being released from a Florida prison? Their answer was yes. That finding made him a Prison Releasee Reoffender, meaning he must serve 100 percent of his sentence with no parole, no early release and no gain time. Henderson also designated him a Habitual Felony Offender, which allowed the judge to double the normal 15-year cap for a second-degree felony to 30 years.Spivey was arrested in June 2023. Henderson denied his motions for a new trial and judgment of acquittal, and the Public Defender has been appointed to handle his appeal. He was given credit for 90#brevardcounty#spacecoastn#judgehenderson#JudgeHenderson ...

Federal, state and local officials gathered in Cocoa on Tuesday at the site of the future Cocoa Multimodal Station to celebrate a $57.5 million Federal Railroad Administration grant that will fund final design and construction of a Brightline passenger rail station on the Space Coast.U.S. Rep. Mike Haridopolos (FL-08) joined FRA Administrator David Fink, Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue and local leaders for the event. The grant was awarded to the City of Cocoa and the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization. The station will sit near US 1, SR 528 and Clearlake Road, roughly 17 miles from Kennedy Space Center and 10 miles from Port Canaveral. Brightline will build the station with the city and then operate and maintain it. The project also includes about four miles of additional double track.Haridopolos said the station is expected to generate up to $350 million in annual economic impact and support 3,500 jobs.Fink credited the Trump administration with moving infrastructure projects forward faster, saying the funding was redirected from California's high-speed rail project.Officials also highlighted a separate $356 million FRA award to FDOT for repairs and safety upgrades at up to 910 highway-rail crossings statewide. Perdue said the technology will be deployed at more than 900 locations to improve safety along Florida's rail co#brightlineB#cocoafle#spacecoastSpaceCoast ...

Lobbyist turned congressman Mike Haridopolos spent more than a decade being paid to influence government, earning millions according to his own financial disclosures. You won't find the word "lobbyist" anywhere on his campaign website. Now he's one of President Trump's most reliable votes. As Republicans across the country quietly distance themselves from the president, Haridopolos voted against ending the Iran war, defended Trump on national TV as gas prices climbed, and hasn't said a word about the $5,000 checks. But there's a pattern when Trump's policies hit home. When Trump's tariffs threatened jobs at Piper Aircraft, he sought an exemption for them. When the Trump's policies included cutting NASA by 24%, he opposed it. Now he's taking credit for saving NASA's budget, even though Congress overrode the White House and the extra $10 billion came from Sen. Ted Cruz. He's also taking credit for ousting Cory Mills even though Trump himself said he was pushing him out. But months earlier, he voted to keep Mills's censure from the House floor. And when he endorsed Mills's opponent, he never mentioned the allegations.Does Haridopolos support President Trump? Absolutely. Does he support his policies? It appears so, as long as they don't apply to his district.Read the full breakdown, with the votes, the quotes and the records in the article below.Do you think Haridopolos is doing a good job representing Brevard and Orange counties? Tell us in the comments.#Haridopolos #SpaceCoast #FloridaPolitics ...
