Today he announced a deal with Vladimir Putin to bring Russian diesel to the American market and touted it as a win for fuel prices which appears to violate the very law he just signed.![]()

Under the agreement, Russia would supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel immediately, another 500,000 tons in November, and 1 million tons after that.![]()

The first 300,000 metric tons works out to roughly 2.2 million barrels. The U.S. uses about 4 million barrels of diesel a day, so the first shipment covers about half a day of American consumption or 2 hours worth, world-wide.![]()

According to his Truth Social post, Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons, then 500,000 tons in November, 1 million tons after that, and eventually 3 million tons. The president said diesel prices will come down "in record numbers, and fast." Moscow has not confirmed the deal.![]()

The announcement raises several questions. Russia's largest oil companies are under U.S. sanctions, and the Kremlin said last month those sanctions would need to be lifted before Russian diesel could flow to world markets in large amounts. If the administration eases them, critics say it would send new revenue to Moscow while its war in Ukraine continues and weaken the pressure the U.S. has been building on Russia's oil industry.![]()

It could also put the U.S. at odds with allies. The European Union bans imports of Russian refined fuel, and Ukraine has been striking Russian refineries specifically to cut off that revenue.![]()
