Gov. DeSantis on Tuesday signed Executive Order 26-222 designating John Anderson's 1992 country hit "Seminole Wind" as Florida's Anthem. The order makes the song a separate designation from the official State Anthem created under section 15.0326, Florida Statutes, which the governor wrote "has had little to no use since its establishment." That anthem, "Florida (Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky)," was adopted by the Legislature in 2008.Anderson was born in Apopka in 1954 and graduated from Apopka High School in 1972 before heading to Nashville. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024 and later into Florida's Artist Hall of Fame at the governor's direction.Under the order, the Secretary of State must update state publications, websites and materials to reflect the designation, promote it within the State Capitol, and erect historic markers in Apopka recognizing Anderson's contributions to Florida's heritage. The governor also directed the Department of Environmental Protection to work with the St. Johns River Water Management District to rename the wildlife drive and trail system at the Lake Apopka North Shore as the John Anderson Wildlife Drive and Trail System.DeSantis encouraged the incoming Legislature to write "Seminole Wind" into state law. The order was filed with the Department of State at 1:55 p.m. and took effect immediately.#Florida #SeminoleWind #Apopka ...

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, the former Florida congressman, got into a shouting match Tuesday with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla on the floor of the U.N. General Assembly. The confrontation happened during the annual debate on a resolution calling for an end to the U.S. embargo on Cuba. Waltz was accusing Cuba's government of enriching its political elite while ordinary Cubans deal with food shortages, power outages and economic hardship. He also displayed photos he said showed the lavish lifestyles of the regime's leaders.Rodríguez left his seat, walked toward the podium and called for a point of order, accusing Waltz of lying. Waltz said the minister simply did not like the substance of his remarks."He's not going to intimidate me in the United States of America, like he tries to intimidate political prisoners," Waltz said, raising his voice."You are a liar!" Rodríguez shouted."Back up!" Waltz fired back.General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman briefly suspended proceedings before allowing Rodríguez to make his point of order. Rodríguez said Waltz was offending the dignity of the Cuban people and government.Video obtained by the New York Post also appears to show a member of the Cuban delegation assaulting a Waltz spokesman during the chaos. The General Assembly is scheduled to vote on the non-binding embargo resolution Wednesday. Last year, 165 countries voted in favor, seven voted against and 12 abstained.#MikeWaltz #Cuba #Florida ...

Cocoa Village’s beloved Vintage Vault has been forced to close after the City of Cocoa determined its historic former bank building is unsafe and ordered the business to vacate just months after their grand opening. The Fuentes family opened the 1920s-themed restaurant and lounge with a grand opening in June, turning the old Barnett Bank vault into cocktail rooms and filling the upstairs with live jazz and local performers. In just a few months, they hosted multiple sold-out events and had more sold out ahead of time.In a heartfelt message Tuesday, the family thanked the city for putting safety first, asked the community to show kindness to their staff facing hardship ahead of the holidays, and made one thing clear: “Our story isn’t over.”“They will be at a new place soon making magic happen,” said Brian Goins of MyCityEvents Space Coast.Read the full story here: ...
