A late night chain reaction crash involving five vehicles and a pedestrian left one man dead and another critically injured early Friday morning on Interstate 95 in Brevard County. The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene just after midnight at mile marker 223, south of State Road 46.
According to FHP, the crash unfolded in three separate impacts, beginning with a lane change gone wrong that set off a series of collisions across all three northbound lanes.
First Crash
Troopers say a 33 year old man from Port St. Lucie was driving a 2019 Chevy Impala (Vehicle 1) in the center lane when he attempted to move into the outside lane. The maneuver put him directly in the path of a 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 (Vehicle 2) driven by a 45 year old man from Weston.
The front right of the Impala struck the rear left of the Volkswagen. The impact caused the Volkswagen to veer off the roadway into a ditch. The Impala swerved across the inside shoulder and hit the concrete median before coming to a stop in the inside northbound lane.
The driver of the Impala, listed as Vehicle 1, was pronounced deceased on scene. His next of kin has been notified.
Second Crash: Good Samaritan Hit While Trying to Help
Following the first impact, a 51 year old driver from Ponte Vedra (Vehicle 3, a 2025 Hyundai Elantra) and a 23 year old woman from Cocoa (Vehicle 4, a 2019 Audi A4) were traveling northbound and approached the disabled Impala in the roadway.
FHP says the Ponte Vedra driver stopped on the inside lane and got out to help. He walked toward the disabled Impala. At the same time, the Audi swerved left and sideswiped the Elantra.
The Elantra was then pushed into the pedestrian, striking him and throwing him into the inside lane ahead of his own vehicle. The Audi also struck the pedestrian after swerving.
The pedestrian, listed as Pedestrian 1 in the report, was critically injured. He was airlifted to HCA Lake Monroe Hospital and remains in critical but stable condition.
Both drivers in this crash were wearing seatbelts and were not injured.
Third Crash
A fifth vehicle, a 2010 Nissan Murano driven by a 30 year old man from Coronado, California, then approached the scene. The Murano was traveling in the center lane when the pedestrian attempted to move out of the roadway.
The Murano driver swerved left but still struck the pedestrian a second time. The driver, passenger, and vehicle occupants were not injured and remained at the scene.

Deceased: 33 year old male, Port St. Lucie, driver of Vehicle 1 Critical: 27 year old pedestrian from Dallas, North Carolina Minor injuries: Driver of Vehicle 2 transported to Parrish Medical Center No injuries: Drivers of Vehicles 3, 4, and 5 and passenger in Vehicle 5
