Brevard County, FL—A man and his two dogs were found dead inside their apartment Monday night, likely victims of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a gas generator.

Deputies responded to the scene at the Merritt Island Gardens Apartments after concerns arose when the man failed to show up for work. A coworker or friend who went to check on him detected an unusual odor emanating from the apartment. Upon entry, emergency crews discovered the man and his pets deceased.

Authorities believe the tragedy occurred after the man, whose electricity had been shut off, borrowed a gas generator for power. Though the generator was not running at the time of discovery, initial evidence suggests it had been operated inside the apartment, creating dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

The exact time of death remains unclear. Brevard County deputies confirmed that a medical examiner is working to establish whether carbon monoxide poisoning is definitively the cause of death.

The use of gas-powered generators indoors poses significant risks, as they emit deadly carbon monoxide—a colorless, odorless gas that can quickly lead to fatal outcomes in confined spaces without proper ventilation. Authorities urge residents to always operate such devices outdoors and far from windows or doors to prevent similar tragedies.
