Troopers say the crash happened around 6:34 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Blacks Road.

Investigators reported that a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, driven by a 49-year-old Cocoa man, was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed as it approached the intersection. Witnesses told FHP the driver failed to slow for stopped traffic, swerved to avoid a collision, then continued into the intersection despite a red light.

At the same time, a 2019 Nissan Sentra, driven by a 45-year-old Cocoa woman, was heading southbound on U.S. 1 with a green light. She was in the process of turning left onto Blacks Road when the pickup slammed into the front of her vehicle.

The impact sent the pickup out of control, where it collided with a utility pole, overturned multiple times, and ultimately landed on its roof.
