13-year-old girl struck and killed while riding bike

Around 4:20pm on Aurora Rd. and Cecilia, a 13-year-old girl was hit by a large suv while riding her bicycle.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the young girl was attempting to cross the street where there was no crosswalk.

She was hit by a Dodge Durango while crossing. Witnesses stated that CPR was attempted at the scene to save the girl’s life.

She was transported to the hospital where she died. The Groveland woman driving the Durango and her passengers were uninjured.

UF BOARD CHAIR: NOT ENOUGH FLORIDA KIDS SCORE OVER 1500 ON THE SATUniversity of Florida Board of Trustees Chair Mori Hosseini is pushing back on a new state law that caps out-of-state enrollment, saying UF has to recruit outside Florida to protect its national ranking.A clip circulating on X quotes Hosseini telling the Board of Governors that UF needs students above a 1500 SAT, that there are not many of them in Florida, and that out-of-state students score higher than in-state ones. END OF WATCH: K9 DRACOThe Cocoa Police Department announced the death of K9 Draco, a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois who served the city since 2022.Draco was dual-certified in patrol apprehension and narcotics detection. According to the department, he worked alongside his handler to help apprehend dangerous suspects and take illegal drugs and firearms off Cocoa streets.Police said Draco collapsed suddenly on Friday while conducting a track during a routine training exercise. He was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital, where staff worked to save him. A federal judge in Boston has again blocked the U.S. Postal Service from carrying out President Trump's executive order limiting mail voting, just as the first states start sending out ballots for the November midterms.U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani issued a preliminary injunction Friday, replacing a temporary order that had been set to expire Sept. 10. The ruling keeps USPS from enforcing new requirements tied to the order, including ballot envelope design standards and a portal for submitting voter data.The Trump administration has already appealed Talwani's earlier restraining order and asked the U.S. Supreme Court to step in. This latest order is expected to be appealed as well.The timing matters. North Carolina began mailing its first ballots Friday and Alabama is set to follow Sept. 9. Florida's mailing window for the Nov. 3 general election opens later this month, and voters must have a current vote-by-mail request on file. Requests made for 2024 expired at the end of that year.Brevard County voters can check or renew their vote-by-mail request through the Supervisor of Elections office.
