The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced a significant safety and operational improvement project for U.S. 192 (State Road 500) in Brevard County. This project, aimed at enhancing the longevity and functionality of the roadway, will focus on the stretch of U.S. 192, also known as West New Haven Avenue, running from Interstate 95 (I-95) to State Road 507 (Babcock Street). The project will impact the cities of Melbourne, West Melbourne, and Melbourne Village.

Project Overview

The improvements will include various upgrades to address safety and operational challenges along this busy corridor. Key components of the project are as follows:

1. Resurfacing and Lane Reconfiguration: The resurfacing initiative will involve enhancements such as the addition of left-turn lanes and the reconfiguration of existing medians. These changes aim to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion for the thousands of drivers who travel along this route daily.

2. Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety: As part of FDOT’s commitment to multimodal safety, the project will involve restriping travel lanes in both directions to allow for 6-foot-wide bicycle lanes. Additionally, crosswalks will be realigned, and new pedestrian crossings will be installed throughout the project area to increase pedestrian safety and accessibility.

3. ADA Compliance: Pedestrian curb ramps along U.S. 192 will be reconstructed to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, ensuring that pedestrians of all abilities can safely access the area.

4. Drainage and Lighting Upgrades: The project will also feature drainage enhancements and improved lighting, both of which are essential for the safety and functionality of the roadway, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

Project Timeline and Contractor

Preferred Materials, Inc. has been contracted for this extensive $20.9 million project. Work commenced in October 2024, with an anticipated completion date of Spring 2025.

What to Expect During Construction

Motorists should be prepared for intermittent daytime lane closures, both eastbound and westbound, between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. The level of work activity will vary throughout the project’s phases, and some unexpected changes in traffic patterns may occur. Commuters are encouraged to check for real-time updates on FDOT’s Central Florida website, CFLRoads.com, to stay informed about lane closures and any changes in traffic conditions.

For those with questions or concerns, Ashley Ingham, the Community Outreach Specialist, can be contacted directly at 321-634-6111 or via email at Ashley.Ingham@dot.state.fl.us.

Community Impact

This project represents a significant investment in the safety and infrastructure of Brevard County, particularly for the cities of Melbourne, West Melbourne, and Melbourne Village. By improving road safety and accessibility for both vehicles and pedestrians, FDOT aims to provide a more secure and efficient travel experience for residents and visitors alike. The addition of bicycle lanes and upgraded crosswalks also supports FDOT’s vision of a more inclusive, multimodal transportation system.
