Four patients went in for routine joint replacements at a Nashville hospital. Two came out paralyzed.Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown has now admitted that a medication error inside its own pharmacy on Aug. 14 caused four joint replacement patients to be injected with potassium phosphate instead of the anesthetic mepivacaine. The drug went into their spines.Glenda Dorton, 72, of Centerville, went in for a knee replacement. Her family says she woke up burning, itching, and unable to feel her legs. She was told days later she has T6 paralysis, no feeling or movement from the breastbone down. A 74-year-old Nashville woman was placed on a ventilator. Families told NewsChannel 5 the syringes were filled at the hospital pharmacy.The hospital says it self-reported to state regulators the same day, identified the cause, and put new safeguards in place, including isolated storage for high-alert medications. CEO Dr. Shubhada Jagasia said she is "deeply sorry for the harm caused to our patients."The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission are both investigating. One medical malpractice attorney interviewed about the case said the only way something like this happens is if someone took a shortcut.Potassium is not a drug you improvise with. Concentrated potassium has been pulled from patient care areas in American hospitals for more than two decades precisely because a mix-up is unsurvivable. Four syringes left that pharmacy wrong. That is not one person having a bad day. That is a system that let it happen four times before anyone caught it.Dorton's family says they are not looking to ruin anyone's career. BREAKING: Chief Justice John Roberts has hit pause on the order that would have stopped construction of President Trump's $400 million White House ballroom today.A lower court injunction was set to take effect Friday, halting above-ground work on the 90,000-square-foot project built where the East Wing stood before it was demolished last fall. Roberts signed a temporary order allowing crews to keep working while the Supreme Court weighs the administration's emergency appeal.Read that carefully, because it matters. This is not the full Supreme Court, and it is not a ruling that the ballroom is legal. It is an administrative stay from one justice, issued with no explanation, buying the Court time. Roberts handles emergency appeals out of Washington by default, and he can still send the case to all nine justices for a vote.Here is what is actually being fought over: a federal judge ruled the project needs congressional approval, and a divided D.C. Circuit panel agreed 2-1 that the president cannot unilaterally build it.
