**Palm Bay woman accused of setting man on fire in Miami-Dade, denied bond**![]()
A 45-year-old Palm Bay woman is being held without bond in Miami-Dade County after deputies say she doused a man with an accelerant and set him on fire following an argument Saturday evening.![]()
Tanisha Shelton is charged with attempted first-degree murder and arson causing great bodily harm, according to her arrest report.![]()
The victim, 33-year-old Nathaniel Devon Mathis, was found unconscious around 6 p.m. near Northwest 63rd Street and 25th Avenue in the Brownsville area. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with burns over at least 80% of his body. The arrest report states he is not expected to survive.![]()
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, Shelton and Mathis argued earlier in the day, and Shelton allegedly threatened to leave and come back with someone to beat him up. Witnesses told investigators she returned several hours later carrying a white plastic bucket with a liquid accelerant inside a plastic bag.![]()
Deputies say Shelton asked a bystander to borrow a lighter, walked up to Mathis, restarted the argument, poured the accelerant on him and set him on fire before running off.![]()
A witness chased her down and pepper sprayed her to keep her from getting away. Deputies found Shelton nearby still wearing the clothing witnesses described, a brown dress and purple sneakers, and arrested her without incident. She asked for an attorney when brought to the Homicide Bureau.![]()
Jail records initially listed a $10,000 bond on the attempted murder charge. At her first appearance Monday, a judge denied bond. She is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.![]()
It is not clear what the argument was about or whether the two knew each other. The investigation remains#palmbay
