Suntree, FL – In a heartwarming display of community spirit, residents of Suntree came together to celebrate a beloved local figure known for his daily acts of kindness. Merle, affectionately dubbed “Mr. Merle” by the children of Suntree Elementary School, has become a cherished part of the morning routine for families in the area, thanks to his cheerful waves and warm smiles as he rides his electric scooter down St. Andrews each day.

The story began when Lori Rose Vasile, a Suntree resident, posted in a local Facebook group asking if anyone knew the name of the “extremely friendly elderly gentleman” who waves at every car passing by on their way to school. Vasile shared that her 10-year-old daughter had nicknamed him “Mr. Fred,” a name that stuck as they looked forward to seeing him each morning. “When I see him, I just know I’ll have the best day ever!” Vasile quoted her daughter, capturing the profound impact of Merle’s simple gesture.

The post sparked a wave of responses from other parents and children who shared similar sentiments. It wasn’t long before Marta Leal-Homerick reached out to Vasile with the gentleman’s real name: Merle. Inspired by the outpouring of love, the children of Suntree Elementary School, along with their parents, decided to organize a special event called “Morning with Merle” to show their appreciation.

On the morning of the event, students and families gathered along St. Andrews with colorful signs reading “WE LOVE YOU, MR. MERLE!” and “MORNINGS WITH MERLE!” They set up tables with snacks and drinks, creating a festive atmosphere to honor Merle and his wife, who joined him for the occasion, along with their poodle, Molly. The couple was visibly moved by the gesture, with Merle shedding tears as children shared how much his daily waves meant to them.

“He had no idea how much his morning waves have meant to all of us each day,” the Suntree Fri… Facebook group posted after the event. “Merle and his sweet wife (and Molly the poodle!!) were so incredibly touched by the joy we spread to them this morning.” The post went on to thank Merle for showing the community that “something as simple as a smile and a wave can truly touch and change the lives of others.”

Photos from the event show a beaming Merle on his red electric scooter, waving alongside his wife in her wheelchair, with Molly in tow. Children of all ages surrounded them, holding signs and sharing hugs, while parents looked on with pride. The event not only brought the community closer but also highlighted the power of small acts of kindness.

As one parent put it, “Us parents knew we are doing something right!” The “Morning with Merle” celebration served as a reminder that even the smallest gestures—like a wave and a smile—can leave a lasting impact on a community.

Merle’s story is a testament to the idea that kindness knows no bounds, and in Suntree, his legacy of spreading joy will continue to inspire for years to come.
