FIVE COCOA BEACH MEN SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR YBOR CITY NIGHTCLUB ROBBERY WHERE MANAGER WAS SHOT IN THE FACE![]()
Five Cocoa Beach men who planned an armed robbery in Brevard County and carried it out at a nightclub near Ybor City have all been sentenced to federal prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida announced Thursday.![]()
U.S. District Judge John L. Badalamenti handed down the following sentences:![]()
Courtenay Smith, 36: 18 years, 4 months
Phillip Johnson, 22: 15 years
Sema-J De-Andre Brothers, 23: more than 14 years
Na'Quezz Mack, 23: more than 14 years
Derrick Worthington, 43: 13 years, 10 months![]()
According to evidence presented at sentencing, all five planned the robbery at Smith's home in Brevard County. Johnson, Brothers, Mack and Worthington then drove to Tampa in two vehicles in the early morning hours of February 1, 2025.![]()
Prosecutors said the group covered their license plates, watched the club and waited for the crowd to thin out. Worthington stayed outside as a lookout while Johnson, armed with a rifle, and Brothers and Mack, each carrying a handgun, went inside wearing masks, gloves and hooded sweatshirts.![]()
Once inside, the men forced bartenders to hand over cash, purses and cellphones, then moved to the back of the business looking for more money. That is where they found the club's manager. Before he could react, Johnson raised his rifle and shot him in the face.![]()
The bullet entered the left side of the manager's face, shattered his nose and exited near his right eye. He ultimately lost the eye.![]()
The men took the club's cash, which was covered in the victim's blood, and drove back to Brevard County, where they split the money at Smith's home. Smith did not go to Tampa, but prosecutors said he helped plan the robbery and supplied items used in it.![]()
Federal prosecutors said members of the group believed they had "killed someone" and were confident they would never be caught because they lived about 100 miles away. They threw cellphones off a bridge, burned their clothing and used bleach to clean blood from their vehicles.![]()
Tampa Police and the FBI investigated the case with assistance from the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Cocoa Police Department and the State Attorney's Office for the 13th Judicial Circuit. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Diego F. Novaes and Lindsey Schmidt prosecuted the case.![]()
