6-Year-Old Riviera Elementary Student Dies After Video Display Board Falls on Palm Bay Campus

PALM BAY, Fla. – A 6-year-old student at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay died Wednesday after a large video display board fell and seriously injured the child on campus, according to Brevard Public Schools and the Palm Bay Police Department.

Emergency responders were called to the school at approximately 11:36 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, after the board fell on the student, the district said.

According to a media statement from Brevard Public Schools, school staff immediately called 911 and began emergency lifesaving measures. The Palm Bay Police Department said in a separate release that it received a 911 call for a medical emergency at the school and that school administrators provided first aid until first responders arrived.

The child was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where medical personnel continued resuscitation efforts. Despite those efforts, the student died, the district said.

“We are devastated by this unimaginable loss,” Brevard Public Schools said in the statement released by Janet Murnaghan, the district’s chief strategic communications officer. “Our deepest condolences are with the student’s family, loved ones, classmates, and everyone in our school community who is grieving.”

The district said additional support and counseling services will be available to students and staff in the days ahead.

Brevard Public Schools said it will not release additional information about the student at this time out of respect for the family’s privacy.

The Palm Bay Police Department described the incident as a tragic accident.

“We are heartbroken to share that the child has died as a result of the injuries,” the department said. “Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, loved ones, and everyone else in our community who is grieving from this tragic accident.”

Police said more information will be released as it becomes available. The department’s case number is 26-007364.
