The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office says a suspect is in custody following a violent sexual assault and home invasion reported earlier this week. Sheriff Wayne Ivey announced that the agency’s GAMEOVER Task Force arrested Kelvin Johnson on charges of Sexual Battery, Home Invasion Robbery, Aggravated Assault, and Violation of Probation.
Deputies responded on January 5 to a call for help after a woman reportedly escaped to a neighbor’s home, banging on the door and begging for assistance. According to investigators, the victim told deputies she had noticed a man lingering in the area for several days while she was in the process of moving out of her residence.
Sheriff Ivey said the victim reported that the man rushed into her apartment, held her at knifepoint, and sexually battered her before fleeing with her phone and car keys.
Detectives say the victim provided a detailed description of the suspect. Surveillance video collected from the surrounding area helped investigators develop images and identify the suspect as Johnson. Agent Michelle Sweet-Caporizzo subsequently obtained a no bond warrant that was signed by Judge Charlie Crawford.
GAMEOVER Task Force agents located Johnson and took him into custody earlier today. He was booked into the Brevard County Jail Complex and is being held without bond.
Sheriff Ivey said cases involving sexual violence are among the most disturbing his office encounters.
“My heart breaks for this victim, and we will do everything we can to help her through this time while keeping her perpetrator locked up so he can never victimize anyone else,” Ivey said, while also thanking neighbors and responding deputies for their role in the investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office said it remains committed to supporting the victim and ensuring she has access to services moving forward.
