Pickup Smashes Into Mailboxes in Palm Bay; Driver Arrested on DUI, Drug Charges

Palm Bay, FL — A Palm Bay man is facing multiple charges after crashing his truck and being found under the influence of alcohol and in possession of cocaine, according to police.

Around 12:41 a.m., Officer Leiva of the Palm Bay Police Department responded to a traffic crash involving a white 2006 GMC pickup truck that had struck two mailboxes and a tree. The driver, identified as Xander Cole Sears, was found at the scene exhibiting signs of impairment, including slow reaction times, slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes.

Despite initially denying alcohol use, Sears later admitted to consuming two shots of Amsterdam liquor. Police reported he voluntarily submitted to field sobriety tests, during which he showed multiple signs of impairment. According to the report, Sears displayed six out of six clues for horizontal gaze nystagmus, six out of eight clues on the walk-and-turn test, and three out of four clues on the one-leg stand test.

Sears refused to take a breath test, prompting officers to read him Florida’s implied consent notice. He then agreed, and two separate breath tests recorded results of 0.155 and 0.155 — nearly twice the legal limit.

During a search of Sears’ wallet, officers discovered a white powdery substance that field-tested positive for cocaine. In total, police documented 0.5 grams of cocaine in his possession.

Sears was transported to Palm Bay Hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Brevard County Jail. He is charged with:

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine)
  • Driving Under the Influence (DUI) with BAC 0.15 or Greater or Under 18 in Vehicle

Bond was set at $2,500 for the drug charge and $500 for the DUI, records show.
