VIERA, FLA – The Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization(SCTPO) is hosting two public engagement events to gather input on the North Merritt Island Pioneer Trail Feasibility Study, which is currently evaluating potential trail alignments on North Merritt Island to define a feasible route for a safe trail connection from S.R. 528 to Pine Island Conservation Area.
The study, conducted in conjunction with Brevard County Parks & Recreation and the Florida Department of Transportation District Five (FDOT D5), is also evaluating a connection that is part of the SUN Trail network and the larger East Coast Greenway, fulfilling an essential goal of improving regional trail networks and enhancing accessibility for residents and visitors.
A recommended trail alignment is proposed using North Tropical Trail from Grant Road to connect to the Pine Island Conservation Area through Sams House at Pine Island, as shown in the figure in pink. This alignment also includes a connection to S.R. 528 using Grant Road and S.R. 3/North Courtenay Parkway.
“The development of safe and accessible trails is essential for improving mobility, recreation, and overall quality of life,” said Georganna Gillette, SCTPO Executive Director. “We encourage the community to participate in these engagement opportunities and provide valuable input to help shape this important connection in North Merritt Island.”
